I was lucky to catch a practice session of Halau na lei kaumaka o uka performing at the Merrie Monarch 2008 Kuhiko (tradtional) hula competition. They were in the basement of the Hilo Hawaiian hotel. Even without their full costume, their hula chant and dance was wonderful.

Hilo Hawaii Veterans Parade 2008

Downtown Hilo had an awesome parade to honor Veterans. Hilo has a lot of men and women serving in the military, ex-military, and veterans from every foriegn war since WWII. So it is with great pride that the veterans are honored in the annual parade. This part of the parade had a group just from Iraq and a fly by of Black Hawk helicopters.
